FAQs
Q. Why a ‘free trial’?
A. It’s important Tom’s a good fit for you, and you’re a good fit for Tom! Tom’s extremely passionate about his bass teaching, and always wants to be teaching to his highest possible standard, so the free trial is all about making sure you’re both going to have an amazing experience together!
Q. Where are you located? Do you travel?
A. I’m currently based in a home studio in Tarragindi. This location is great for anyone living in the immediate area or surrounding suburbs such as Salisbury, Yeronga, Coorparoo, Camp Hill, Holland Park West, Annerley, Greenslopes, and Moorooka! I can travel to you for an extra fee that I’m happy to negotiate with individuals.
Q. Do I need my own instrument to start?
A. The short answer is, no! We have plenty of instruments here at our beautiful home studio in Tarragindi, and there’s actually heaps you can learn about music without even holding an instrument! We do not offer instruments for you to take home, but you can definitely get started without already owning one, just let us know!
Q. Am I too old to start?
A. Definitely not. Tom’s experience, both gigging and teaching all over the world, is that the biggest roadblock to learning anything new, is feeling like there’s something ‘wrong’ when you suck at it. You’re going to suck at it. That’s the point. If you were good at it, by definition, you wouldn’t be learning anything. So any cheeky thoughts of being ‘too old’ or ‘too busy’ or, the worst of the bunch, being ‘un-talented’, should be thrown straight in the bin. There’s no such thing as talent, there’s just passion, or lack thereof. Don’t make excuses. Make a start.
Q. Am I (or my child) too young to start?
A. Short answer: no. Long answer: it can be a little difficult for very young children to get their hands around ANY instrument, so there’s definitely unique challenges to our young rockstar’s and future jazz maestros. The good news is, there’s LOTS that children can learn at this stage that doesn’t require the physical dexterity that they’ll grow into in the years to come. They’ll definitely play their instrument, and when the limit of their physiology is reached in each lessons, Tom simply moves on to one of the other thousand things that they’ll be fascinated by! In fact, Tom’s found that for young children, it’s all about making lessons super engaging and self-motivating, which means rapid task switching is a must no matter what.
Q. What’s the deal with the price? (you’re more expensive that competitors)
A. We believe you get what you pay for. Toms experience, both as a musician, touring the world playing bass, and as a teacher, honing his craft in beautiful Brisbane, dwarfs that of most local bass tutors, many of which are still university students, and most of which are not even really bassists!
